A Porter's Paints tint machine has sixteen colours, but there are four tints on the carousel that are unique,
unusual and handmade. These tints add a depth and naturalness that other paint manufacturers don't have.
Whenever I'm creating custom colours, I try to add unusual combinations and at least one of these tints for colour complexity.
PL: a neutral Raw Umber that's perfect for dirtying and adding depth to colour.
I use this tint the most and it's my favourite substitute for B (Black).
BU: a warm Burnt Umber that gives a soft and natural earthiness.
Another favourite for adding an interesting layer to other colours.
J: a Violet that will really twist and turn when used with other colours
(have a look at what it does when combined with yellow). This tint is for interiors only.
K: an unusual natural Green that enhances D (Pthalo Green).
Now, the single most important part of creating an interesting colour full of depth is light.
Make sure you have heaps of natural light so that you can check your custom colour.
And of course keep an accurate recipe so that the hue can be repeated perfectly
again, and again. You'll also need a good quality hairdryer (I prefer a heat gun),
a fan for the natural paints and lots of cardboard for swiping paint samples on.
