Bhavnesh is the hard working,

in-house chemist who crafts all of Porter's handmade paints in our Sydney workshop.

Bhavnesh is also kept busy checking each batch of broadwall acrylic paint,

but the other day he had an urgent order of Mineral Paint that he needed to complete.

So, I helped him out by making some Milk Paint for another big order being sent to

Korea so that he could focus on his many tasks.

Milk Paint is a traditional paint and the manufacturing process is similar to Boncote,

Lime Wash and Mineral Paint.

I thought it would be interesting to explain the methods for making these old fashioned paints.

Milk Paint is a powder that is mixed by hand. To colour the paint,

which is a blend of casein and lime, you add measured quantities of oxide.

A recipe is kept as you slowly build the colour. Finally,

a small amount of Milk Paint powder is mixed with water, then brushed out and dried.

The colour is checked each time you add oxide until you finally achieve the desired hue.

This process takes time but there is no quicker way of colouring the paint.

Anyway, I made the colours for the Korean order which meant Bhavnesh finished off his Mineral Paint.

The following day we were back on track: I was training the customer service team in Padstow,

and Bhavnesh was checking the viscosity of the handmade Eggshell Acrylic.
